The day I was going to leave for Nord, I sent an email to my supervisor. In the email, I told him that I was pregnant. Not long after, he replied, "My goodness! That's wonderful news, Wendy! Congratulations! I'll get everything ready for you, including your accommodation and prenatal checkups. I'll arrange for someone to meet you at the airport and take you straight to your new home the moment you arrive." Reading his message, I almost burst into tears. I had been worried they might reconsider my research assignment because of my pregnancy, but I didn't expect them to give me so much support. It was a huge comfort at a time like this. On the day I left, I picked a loose dress to hide my slightly rounded belly. At the airport, a young man waved at me. "Wendy Morgan!" He had delicate features and a warm smile. "Hi, I'm Shaun Rivers." He took my luggage like a gentleman, smiling all the while. " I've heard a lot about you, Wendy. It's great to finally meet you in person." I smiled back, but deep down, I was anxious. After all, it was my first time traveling abroad alone, not to mention I was pregnant. Still, Shaun's care and attention slowly put me at ease. He helped me with the check-in and accompanied me all the way to security. "Don't worry, Wendy, I'll take care of everything when you arrive," he reassured me, patting my hand. I nodded, feeling grateful. Suddenly, I heard a familiar voice nearby. "Jane, be careful." My heart skipped a beat. It was Zayne! What was he doing here? I instinctively lowered my head, afraid he would see me. Luckily, Jane Dunn's voice echoed soon after. "Zayne, I want to try that new cafe. Can you take me there?" Zayne hesitated. "Wait a second. I thought I heard Wendy's name just now. Let me call her and..." He looked my way, so I quickly bent down, pretending to organize my luggage to avoid him as I sweated nervously. But Jane grabbed his hand. "Don't bother, she's probably at the lab right now. You'll just disturb her. Let's go to the cafe first. We won't have time later once our business partners arrive." Zayne nodded, and the two of them walked off in another direction. I finally breathed a sigh of relief. I watched them leave with mixed feelings. When I was plotting for Zayne to sign the divorce papers, he wouldn't have signed so easily if Jane hadn't interrupted him. And now, I might have been found out if Jane hadn't distracted him yet again. In a way, I had Jane to thank for helping me leave. "Wendy, it's time for security," Shaun's voice brought me back. I pulled myself together and followed him through security. At the checkpoint, Shaun handed me a postcard. "Here, take this. You can send it to your family... Just to let them know you're safe." I took the postcard. It showed a beautiful, mysterious glacier. Nevertheless, I smiled and shook my head before tossing the postcard into the trash can. "It's fine. I don't have anyone to send it to." I didn't want any more ties to my past. After boarding the plane, I found my seat and sat down. Shaun double-checked everything for me, then reminded me, "Wendy, the lab has new equipment ready for you. They even adjusted your schedule, so just focus on your health." Hearing all his considerate arrangements, I could feel my nose start to sting again. These were things Zayne had never done for me over the past four years. I took a deep breath, trying to steady myself. When it was time to board, I looked back one last time at the city full of lies and loneliness. Zayne Ford, we were truly over.
