---- Chapter 7 Shaking my head, I told Ivy, ''No. I won't be going back." From the moment I chose to join the Frontline Medical Corp, I'd decided to dedicate my life to serving those in need all over the world. How could I leave now? I couldn't go anywhere, not until such a time when there were no longer any wars and our services were no longer needed. Before that came to be, home was wherever I was posted. "I'm being serious, Abel. I know I made a terrible mistake. I should never have lied to you. I should never have willfully made the decision to have a baby all by myself," Ivy cried out. "T've paid the price for my actions. Toby is in critical condition right now. His doctor says he might go any day now. How am I supposed to support a child by myself, Abel? You promised you'd look after me for the rest of my life." I forcefully retracted my hand from hers and said, ---- "We're divorced, Ivy. The rest of your life is your own business now. I have work to do. It's dangerous here. You should head back home as soon as possible." I turned around and headed back toward the base. "Tf you don't leave, then I won't, either! I'm going to stay right here with you. Once you're finally done with everything you want to do, I'll head home with you," Ivy declared. I didn't want to pay any attention to her. However, I'd only taken two steps when I overheard the call Ivy just received. It sounded like it was froma hospital back home. "What did you say? Toby's dead? I'm coming back right now. You have to wait until I get back!" At that very moment, two bombers appeared in the sky. When I heard the familiar roars of their engines, I instinctively pushed Ivy down to the ground. "Abel! Have you lost your mind?" she shrieked. ---- However, her voice was soon drowned out by the sound of explosions nearby. The entire ground shook as the dust and dirt from the explosions scattered all over us. Ignoring Ivy's screeches, I carefully looked around before dashing back onto my feet. The explosions seemed to have terrified her. She sat frozen on the ground without moving. I glanced at her before pulling her back on her feet as well. "Head inside to avoid getting caught in the explosions." I was used to experiencing these life-threatening bombings from time to time, but Ivy had never encountered such a situation before. Her lips trembled as she asked, "'W-Will I die here?" Pursing my lips, I stayed silent for a moment before answering, "I'll ask my team leader to get someone who'll take you away from here later. Don't ever come back." Ivy's face was covered in dust. She stood in silence, gripping her phone tightly. ---- Soon, Zachary came over with a local who drove a pickup truck. The man urged Ivy to get in at once. I passed some money and instructed him to deliver her safely to the airport. Even though our relationship had come to an end, I couldn't stand by and let someone die. Ivy remained silent. It felt like she was still terrified by her ordeal. After speaking to the local, I turned around just in time to see her hastily rushing into the pickup truck. I smirked faintly. Her reaction didn't surprise me. When I got back to the base, Sean came up to me, eager for gossip. "Was that pretty lady your girlfriend? Considering how she came all the way here just to see you, it has to be true love! That's nothing like my ex- girlfriend. As soon as she found out I was leaving the country to come on this mission, she broke up with me and found herself a new guy!" he declared. "But why didn't she come back with you?"
