Yunyi gave a few more instructions to the mother-in-law and daughter-in-law, then turned and left the patient’s room. Checking the time, after all that commotion, it was nearly the end of her shift. Just as she returned to her office, Doctor Qiu followed her in. "Yunyi," he said, "I’ll take your shift tonight, and you can repay the favor next time." Doctor Qiu also noticed something unusual. Knowing that things might become unstable soon, he worried that if something happened at night, Yunyi, being a young woman, might not be able to handle it. He thought it would be better for him to cover the night shifts for everyone in the coming days. Yunyi knew Doctor Qiu meant well. "Doctor Qiu," she said, "you’ve forgotten that I have martial arts skills. I’ll be fine." You don’t need to worry." Assured by her words, Doctor Qiu agreed, "In that case, alright." After Doctor Qiu left, Yunyi prepared the medical orders, just as Nurse Chen Xiaojuan also came in. Yunyi handed the medical orders to her. "Keep a close eye on things," she instructed, "and notify me promptly if anything happens." Chen Xiaojuan knew the importance of the matter and nodded. "I understand." With her tasks there finished, Yunyi went to the entrance of the clinic to see if Huo Jingrui had finished his work and returned. And, as luck would have it, just as she stepped out, she saw Huo Jingrui approaching from a distance. Perhaps it was a case of telepathy; Huo Jingrui also looked up and saw her. The two of them stood there, looking at each other from a short distance away. Huo Jingrui quickened his pace and approached her. "You’re on duty today, right?" he asked. "What would you like to eat? I’ll cook for you." Thinking of Jingrui from her past two lives, whom she had trained into an excellent cook, Yunyi wondered how much he knew this time around, aside from roasting game. "What can you cook?" she asked. Huo Jingrui smiled. "I spent some time in the cooking squadron before. I originally thought I hadn’t learned anything and wouldn’t manage, but unexpectedly—I don’t know how—the dishes I cooked turned out as good as the head chef’s. That felt really uplifting; I almost got carried away with pride. "Tell me, what do you want to eat? I’ll go to the cafeteria later to fetch some ingredients and cook for you personally." Yunyi was touched by his words but still spoke in a lowered voice, "Make sure you’ve finished your tasks; don’t delay important work just to cook for me." Huo Jingrui nodded and mouthed the words, "Chief Qiao has already set out." Yunyi glanced toward the backyard of the clinic. "Let’s go," she said. "I have frozen and cured meat; I’ll get it for you. Use whatever I have, so you don’t need to run to the cafeteria and ask for favors." However, Huo Jingrui didn’t agree. "If I’m going to cook," he said, "I might as well do it right. The ingredients naturally can’t be just anything. I’ll see what we’re missing; a trip to the cafeteria isn’t a big deal. Just wait and enjoy the food." As they talked, they headed back to the small courtyard, one walking after the other. On their way back, though they appeared to be chatting, they were both surreptitiously observing their surroundings, as both possessed exceptionally sharp senses. After entering the courtyard, Yunyi deliberately extended her spiritual power to scan the area. Sure enough, just as they had sensed, a man stood at the corner across the street, his gaze fixed in this direction. However, judging by his stance, it didn’t seem he was watching them. Instead, he was staring in the direction of the clinic. For a moment, Yunyi was puzzled. Huo Jingrui sensed the change in her emotions. "What’s wrong?" he asked. Yunyi pulled him into the house. "After you left," she began, "a pregnant woman came to the clinic. Something happened to her, and I felt that something wasn’t quite right, so I coaxed some information out of her..." She then recounted to Huo Jingrui, in detail, everything that had happened at the clinic.
