---- crying now. Ethan remembered Tyler's eager eyes. "Mom, is Dad coming home for dinner tonight?" And Sarah would always say, so gently, "Daddy's saving patients. He loves you very much." "Sarah spent every birthday alone because you always said there was an emergency at the hospital." "Every parent-teacher conference, every school play for Tyler, Sarah was there by herself, sitting all alone." Her mom pointed at him, her finger shaking like a leaf. Ethan remembered Sarah's birthday last year. She'd made a special dinner, wore that red dress he loved. "Ethan, it's my birthday today," she'd reminded him, so carefully. ---- But then Isabella called: "Emma wants to see you. She got first place on her test!" And he just left, without a second thought. Left Sarah sitting there alone with her candlelit dinner. He remembered Tyler's Christmas pageant. Tyler on stage, looking for him, his eyes filled with disappointment. Sarah in the audience, clapping by herself, recording itall. And he'd only heard Sarah's quiet sobs in the background of that video after Tyler was already gone. All those moments Ethan had missed came flooding back. Tyler's birthday parties. Tyler learning to ride his bike. Tyler drawing his first family picture. ---- Tyler sick. Tyler dying. "Now Tyler's dead, Sarah's gone, and now you want to fix things?" Her mom was sobbing. "It's too late! Way too late!" "Please, I'm begging you, just tell me where she is." Ethan dropped to his knees. "Get out." Her dad's voice was like ice. "And don't ever show your face here again." The door slammed shut. He stayed kneeling outside, feeling a despair he'd never known. And just then, of all people, Isabella called. "Ethan? Emma's sick, she has a high fever. You're a doctor, you..." "You know I'm a doctor? I couldn't even save my own ---- son! What kind of doctor am I?!" Ethan screamed, hysterical, like a completely different person. "What? Tyler...?" Isabella was stunned. "He's DEAD! Happy now? Don't ever call me again. I can't take care of anyone else's kid!" Ethan hung up and blocked Isabella's number. Then, he sent a resignation letter to the hospital director. The director didn't accept it, just said they'd extend his leave. Ethan didn't have the strength to deal with anyone anymore. He packed his bags and started searching for Sarah, all across America.
