Anna Hollis spoke, a sarcastic smile on her face, scanning Eleanor Hollis from head to toe. At this moment, Nicholas Hollis was not present, so she didn’t need to hide her dislike for Eleanor. Eleanor calmly took a bite of fruit, as if she hadn’t heard what Anna said. In the past, Anna would have lost her temper, but ever since she found out she wasn’t Nicholas Hollis’s daughter, she had become more sensible. Besides, her mother had long told her that as long as she followed her plan, she could definitely get Eleanor, the true heiress, out of the picture. The living room fell into an eerie silence until Nicholas Hollis came with a doctor to change the bandage, breaking the quiet. "Dad, it’s really just a minor injury. It’s not that serious. As long as the fever goes down, it’ll be fine." Nicholas Hollis held her shoulder, preventing her from moving. "I saw the wound. You’re really something. Usually, you don’t show this kind of maturity. Let the doctor properly apply the medicine. Be careful of infection." Nicholas’s concern was genuine; this time, he truly felt sorry for Anna. Anna pursed her lips and smiled, ceasing to speak, and obediently cooperated with the doctor. Eleanor sat nearby, eating fruit. Seeing Nicholas’s attitude, she didn’t know how to feel. It wasn’t disappointment; perhaps it was frustration. The maid quickly served dinner. Eleanor ate some and was about to put down her chopsticks when she noticed Rachel Lynch putting more food into her bowl. "Eleanor, eat more. You’ve lost weight recently." Rachel’s tone sounded insincere, at least to Eleanor. She had been about to put down her chopsticks. She didn’t believe this woman hadn’t noticed; she did it on purpose to annoy her. Eleanor’s hand holding the chopsticks stiffened, and she placed the largest piece of braised pork into Rachel’s bowl. "Mrs. Lynch, you too." This piece of braised pork happened to be all fat, without lean meat, looking greasy. Rachel’s face stiffened; she hated fatty meat the most. She didn’t move her chopsticks, and neither did Eleanor. "Eleanor, your mom doesn’t like fatty meat." Nicholas only then noticed the scene and moved the braised pork from Rachel’s bowl. Eleanor’s lips curled slightly, and she put the celery from her bowl into his. "Dad, I’m allergic to celery. You can have it." Rachel had just given her celery. Eleanor’s tone was normal, casual, but in Nicholas’s ears, it was different. His daughter was allergic to celery, yet Rachel, as her mother, didn’t know anything about it. This was indeed a parenting failure. Nicholas’s smile faded slightly, looking at Eleanor with guilt. "If you don’t like something, just give it all to me. Eleanor, is there anything else you’re allergic to? Next time, I’ll make sure the kitchen doesn’t make these." The conversation between father and daughter felt like a slap across Rachel’s face. Rachel’s teeth clenched, her hand at her side already forming a fist. This b**** always finds a way to embarrass her! "Stella, look at you. Eleanor is allergic to celery, and you still gave her celery. Be more careful next time." Nicholas indeed started to scold Rachel, but he didn’t mean to blame her much. "Sister, it’s normal that mom doesn’t know your allergies after so many years apart. You still need to speak up yourself; otherwise, incidents like just now, which put a well-meaning person in an awkward position, will happen. People might think you did it on purpose." Anna immediately jumped in to defend Rachel, every word laced with sarcasm, insinuating Eleanor deliberately made Rachel look bad. "Exactly, Stella was just being kind. If you’re allergic to celery, just don’t eat it. Saying it like that puts her in an awkward spot; you’re really too thoughtless." Wendy Sullivan also chimed in timely, both of them siding with Rachel. Eleanor sighed slightly, gently put down her chopsticks. ᴛʜɪs ᴄʜᴀᴘᴛᴇʀ ɪs ᴜᴘᴅᴀᴛᴇ ʙʏ 𝕟𝕠𝕧𝕖𝕝※𝕗𝕚𝕣𝕖※𝕟𝕖𝕥 "I didn’t mean it that way. Why do you have to be so aggressive?" The moment the words "aggressive" came out, the atmosphere at the dining table instantly changed. Wendy and Anna’s faces turned a shade darker; Eleanor’s words made it seem like the three of them were bullying her. Indeed, the old gentleman heavily set down his chopsticks. "It’s just a meal, where’s all this scheming coming from, turning it into a battlefield!" Wendy and Anna fell silent instantly, each gritting their teeth, swallowing the bitter pill. Rachel also stopped talking, giving Eleanor a fierce look in private. Eleanor smiled, it seemed the three women had already conspired. Are they that eager to kick her out? Cara Chase started to ponder. Rachel’s reluctance for Anna to take a paternity test, was there another secret, or was Anna really not Nicholas’s child? Thinking of this, Eleanor felt a shiver run through her. She looked at Anna closely and indeed couldn’t find a resemblance to Nicholas. If Anna wasn’t really Nicholas’s child, then this charade wouldn’t last much longer. Back in her room, Eleanor called Hugo Quinn. He’s the only one she could rely on now. "Help you investigate the car accident Rachel had back then?" Hugo’s fingers drummed lightly on the desk, a favor usually comes with a price. "Yes, Rachel won’t let Anna do a paternity test. I suspect Anna isn’t my father’s child. Now, the three women in the house have already reached some sort of agreement, trying to drive me out sooner." She wouldn’t let them succeed. "After the investigation, how about we have a meal together? I have a friend coming back from abroad you probably haven’t met." It’s said a man will only introduce you to his friends when he’s ready to acknowledge you. Eleanor felt warmth in her heart, her lips curling into a smile. Hugo was delighted, immediately calling Lan Yancy in to investigate the incident of Rachel’s car accident back then. Time flew by, and it was Nicholas Hollis’s birthday. Nicholas had always been a low-key person, and even on his birthday, he only took family and friends out for a meal. This was Eleanor’s first time attending as the daughter of the Hollis Family, and she dressed appropriately. Nicholas kept introducing her to his friends, his face full of gratification. Previously, people had heard about Eleanor’s reputation, but seeing her in person, they found her to be gracious and polite, setting aside rumors. Eleanor stayed by Nicholas’s side, smiling until her face almost froze. Finally able to sit down, she let out a slight sigh of relief, holding the gift she had prepared in her hand. The gift was a tie clip she had personally bought yesterday. Midway through the meal, she was about to take out the tie clip when she saw Anna standing up beside her.
