---- Chapter 5 "All of you, get out." Kael's voice was a low thunder, laced with an authority that could not be defied. The kneeling wolves scrambled out of the hall as if the Goddess herself had granted them a pardon. Only Damon remained, frozen in place. "Your Majesty, there must be some misunderstanding " "T said, everyone," Kael's eyes were still blood-red. " That includes you." The color drained from Damon's face. "'y-yes, Your Majesty." He shot me one last look-a toxic mix of confusion and resentment- before he turned and retreated. Soon, only Kael and I were left. He walked over to me and knelt on one knee. ---- "T'm sorry I was late." He knelt, his voice raw. He gently traced the silver wounds on my arm, anda golden light flowed from his palm. A warm energy spread through my body. The silver poison was neutralized, and the cuts healed in seconds, leaving not even a scar. "Better?" he asked. Inodded. "Thank you." He helped me to my feet, the crimson in his eyes not yet fully faded. "T'm going to kill them," he said. His voice was calm, but the killing intent was sharp and clear. "Right now. " "No." I grabbed his arm. "Not now." "Why?" He turned to look at me. "They hurt you." "Because killing them would be too easy." I glanced toward the hall's entrance. ---- The others were still gathered in the corridor, whispering amongst themselves. "Listen," I whispered, my voice tight. "Just listen to them." We moved closer to the door. Damon's voice carried through. "She's the King's temporary plaything at best. You know how powerful Alphas can have certain... interests." "What are you saying?" That was Marcus's voice. "Maybe the King just has a taste for damaged goods. Once he gets tired of her, he'll just toss her aside, won't he?" "That makes sense," another Alpha agreed. "The King wouldn't make enemies of all our major packs for one woman." "Exactly. If we stand together, he'll have to think twice."
