Having bought a house, Zhang Yu only goes home during Spring Festival; she can’t be bothered to return even during summer vacation. Besides having to follow her professor to complete tasks, she feels that her home in H City is her real home. The house back home, the small partitioned room, ever since Chen Jiaojiao had a kid, has been filled with more and more things belonging to the child. The small partitioned room she used to live in has now become a place piled high with children’s toys. She was surprised; she thought Chen Jiaojiao and Zhang Hao would change the layout inside, but it remained the same. The layout was still the setup she had during her time living there; Zhang Yu remembers both Zhang Hao and Chen Jiaojiao expressing that once their child grows up, they’d let him study there, hoping he could be as excellent as Zhang Yu. As for their hopes, all Zhang Yu can do is offer blessings, considering their hope that he could be as outstanding as her is truly difficult. Getting a child to sit at a desk all day, aside from doing practice problems, just reading, just memorizing things—there really aren’t many children who can endure that. Even by the time of middle school, being able to focus on studying like that is extremely difficult. Zhang Hao’s son, Zhang Yu hasn’t seen much of him, but from the videos and photos shared in the family group, it all seems to show he’s a smart kid. However, he’s been somewhat spoiled by Liang Yanjiao; Zhang Dong wants to properly educate the child but is busy with work and Granny Zhang isn’t in good health. Besides being busy with work, Zhang Dong is occupied with taking care of Granny Zhang, and as for the grandson, he can only squeeze in time for some early education. But his so-called early education is intermittent; as for the effect, Zhang Yu anyway isn’t optimistic. After the child was born, Zhang Hao showed some initiative, being slightly more responsible—but only slightly, like after graduating from vocational school, he went to work at a company. Living off a pitifully meager wage, never considering to learn something to improve himself—in short, he plans to muddle through in the organization until retirement. After the child turned one year old, despite saying he wouldn’t manage Zhang Hao and his wife’s affairs, Zhang Dong still pulled some strings to help Chen Jiaojiao find a job in the community. Zhang Yu knows she’s already registered for Night University, planning to first get an associate degree and then a bachelor’s degree. Zhang Yu truly can’t understand Zhang Hao; his wife is already working so hard, yet he’s not the least bit moved. Instead, he plans to coast in hospital logistics until retirement. Even with Zhang Dong’s connections to help find a job, holding only a vocational school diploma, he’s merely a temporary employee at the hospital. Without striving to improve his title, without enhancing his education, over ten or twenty years, will he still be able to stay at the hospital? Zhang Yu really can’t understand Zhang Hao, his wife is striving to advance, yet he’s just sitting there comfortably. Zhang Yu successfully got the guaranteed entry, even though everyone knew she would get it, still quite a few people thought Zhang Yu should check out schools outside of the University of Science and Technology of China. Even if she can’t go abroad, going to Q University or F University would do—mathematics departments at these schools are in no way inferior to those at the University of Science and Technology. More importantly, these two universities are aware of Zhang Yu and hope she would go to study for her graduate degree there, offering quite favorable conditions. They promised scholarships and such, including a famous professor as her mentor. Knowing Zhang Yu often goes to the physics department to attend classes, they’ve all expressed that as long as Zhang Yu goes to study at their school, she can consult and attend classes with their physics professors anytime. In many people’s eyes, they really feel such conditions aren’t generally good—once she goes out, she’ll definitely be something to be envied. But Zhang Yu still says she hasn’t considered going to another school for graduate studies or changing mentors. At this point, everyone somewhat understands why Zhang Yu doesn’t want to go to another school for graduate studies; it should relate to her future career. These past years, Zhang Yu has been following her professor often to intern at the aviation research institute, analyzing and processing data, all assumed to be tasks set by the professor—Zhang Yu is just gaining experience. Now they finally fully understand it’s to gain experience and credentials, waiting for employment in the future. Many people truly don’t understand Zhang Yu’s choice; clearly, she could have better options, yet she chose this path. For Zhang Dong regarding Zhang Yu’s choice, he’s of mixed feelings; as a researcher, having his child take this path is surely something that makes him happy and gratified. From a parent’s perspective, who doesn’t wish for their child to have a better future? Zhang Yu can only offer blessings. Zhang Dong didn’t mention Zhang Yu’s graduate school plans to colleagues, but they were quite concerned and knew Zhang Yu plans to stay at the University of Science and Technology of China for graduate studies. One colleague suddenly asked, "Old Zhang, has your daughter’s job pretty much been decided?" Responding slowly, still pondering why Zhang Yu, with such good grades, hadn’t gone abroad or switched schools, clearly better mathematics departments exist in the country. Upon hearing this, initially not reacting and not understanding that this is just a matter of securing a graduate place—how is it they suddenly gleaned something about the job? Someone quickly recalled, "Right, how could they forget about the mentor your daughter is following?" "Quite impressive, she’s just going to be in the same field. Though the work is different, it’s all within the research institute." Working in a research institute means no idiots, and quickly they realized, "Congratulations, congratulations." Zhang Dong modestly replied, "It’s not decided yet, anyway, it’s up to the child whether she likes it." Some think Zhang Yu’s choice is fine, some think there are better options—why not take the better ones? But it’s all irrelevant to them, and even Zhang Dong agrees, they certainly won’t express opinions. Zhang Hao regarding Zhang Yu’s choice has only heard of it and said he knows, as for her progress, Zhang Hao says he can’t keep up with jealousy and can’t match her, it’s simply a matter of hearing it. The whole family isn’t entirely without opinions; Liang Yan does have her thoughts—knowing Zhang Yu plans to work in a research institute, she’s genuinely unhappy. She feels Zhang Yu could have better choices, tutoring would work, or going to a financial company, to a bank, all places to make big money. Why insist on staying in a research institute, engaging in merely support work, with no patent fees to take—though the wages might be okay, how much can the salary really be? Definitely can’t support Xiao Bao, Zhang Hao and his wife’s earnings just enough for their own expenses—it’s impossible to support Xiao Bao more. Xiao Bao’s prospects still depend on Zhang Yu, this aunt, with money and connections, she could certainly better support Xiao Bao. This girl insists on entering a research institute for work, Liang Yan truly doesn’t understand her choice. Liang Yan states as her mother she must have a proper discussion with Zhang Yu about her future.
