Chapter 14 "Look at what you've done! Adri looks thinner every time I see her!" Carlos thought for a moment and then couldn't help but add, "She's mildly malnourished." Garrett's face darkened instantly. Malnourished? His woman? That would be a laughingstock. He immediately called up the two maids who usually looked after Adrienne at the villa. The maids knelt in fright. "Sir, it's not our fault. Mrs. Melendez doesn't feel like eating all the time. She just reads every day and often forgets to eat." "Yes, and she never listens when we remind her." The two of them were pale with fear as Garrett asked, "What do you usually cook?" "Crab and shrimp etouffee, blue crab beignets… also dishes like keto cheeseburger casserole. All gourmet dishes that require skill." Garrett chuckled. "Did you make those for her, or for yourselves? You've been taking care of her for three years, and you still don't know she's allergic to crab? And she hates greasy food like cheeseburger casserole." The maids were terrified and immediately begged for forgiveness. "Mr. Melendez, we really didn't know!" Corinne had seen maids taking liberties when they saw the mistress wasn't favored. Adrienne wasn't the type to tattle, so she kept enduring it until her health ended up like this. Garrett's face was stormy, his eyes flashing with dangerous coldness. "Pack your things. Get out!" The two maids were from the old family estate, and Corinne knew them. Now they clung to her side, begging. "Madam Melendez, we've served the family for so many years. Please don't let us go." She kicked them away. "The mistress is malnourished, and you two look quite well-nourished. Looks like you haven't missed a single good meal for yourselves these past few years." Their faces turned ghostly pale, and they didn't dare say another word. For years, Adrienne had barely spoken to them. She quietly read her books and only ate some cabbage. Most of the time, she just stared out the window like she was depressed. They both knew she wasn't favored. Mr. Melendez barely came home. Their guts had only grown bolder with time. They always cooked the most expensive foods, king crab, paua, whatev- er was rare and pricey, and then ate it themselves. Adrienne never said a word. 0.0 % 16:43 "We… we…" But they didn't dare continue. They slunk off in shame. Corinne rubbed her temples and suddenly slapped Garrett across the face. "Look at what you've done! If you didn't like her, you should've divorced her long ago. How come Adri ended up with you?" The slap came so fast that it caught everyone off guard. Garrett's head turned slightly from the impact. Carlos stood awkwardly to the side. He had always known that Corinne liked Adrienne, but not this much. Garrett didn't react to the slap. Instead, he gently turned Corinne's body. "Grandma, that's enough. Go rest in the guest room. If you really want her to get better, stay here for a while." Corinne flung his hand away. "Garrett, let me tell you. I like Adri way more than I like you, you brat. If you don't know how to cherish her, then let me find her a new match." A chill passed through Garrett's eyes. "Who could she be with, if not me? Grandma, she's been by my side since she was twelve." Back then, she was so small, all skin and bones from hunger. When he handed her a slice of toast, she held it like a precious treasure. Corinne breathed a sigh of relief, rubbing her brow. "I'm tired. I'll be staying here for the next month. Don't cause any trouble."
