Chapter 23 Staring in the direction Garrett's car had gone, she sneered without turning around, "Things between him and Adri- enne have become so nasty. There's no going back between them. I'm sure he's into me now. It's just… he doesn't dare to admit his feelings because of his promise to her back then." "Beth, I just don't want to see you get hurt. I'll always love you and wait for you." In the car, Garrett leaned back while keeping his eyes closed. Blood continued to drip from his palm, which was hor- rifying. Jared was driving. After some thought, he took the liberty of calling Adrienne. "Mrs. Melendez, Mr. Melendez is hurt. It's serious." Groggy, Adrienne instinctively wanted to get up as she heard this. Over the past three years, she'd always rush over whenever something happened to Garrett. But someone would al- ways beat her to it, and everyone would laugh at her, calling her pathetic. Similar things had happened so many times that she had grown used to it, and she no longer felt a thing. She lay back down slowly. Her tone was as flat as ever, and not a trace of worry could be detected. "Then take him to a doctor. What's the point of calling me?" Jared wanted to say something, but Adrienne had already hung up. A bit uneasy, he glanced at the rearview mirror, met Garrett's gaze, and put down the phone awkwardly. Garrett let out a cold laugh, his eyes filled with mockery. "Why bother calling her? She wants me to die as soon as possible so that she can be with the love of her life." Jared clutched the steering wheel, not daring to say a word. He was struggling inside-should he drive back to Cloudhaven Mansion or to the hospital? In the back seat, Garrett stared at the ceiling. The car's interior was dimly lit, and the passing streetlamps outside the car illuminated his reflection in the window, leaving the self-loathing in his eyes nowhere to hide. After what felt like an eternity, he finally spoke, "Go back to Cloudhaven Mansion." "But your hand…" Jared was hesitant. "I'm fine," he said. Jared could only nod. 0.0 % 16:44 Less than ten minutes after arriving home, Garrett received a call from the Melendez's mansion. Corinne had taken a fall while out for a walk earlier tonight and was now at the hospital. They wanted him there right away. He rushed to the hospital at once. The Melendez family ran a few upscale hospitals, and this was where they went whenever someone was injured. Adrienne changed her clothes and rushed over after hanging up the phone. As soon as she stepped out of the car, she spotted Garrett. She paused for a second before running inside the hospital, as if she hadn't seen him at all. She ran away so quickly-he almost wondered if he was some kind of plague. Staring at her back, he couldn't help but feel inexplicably annoyed. Soon, Adrienne went to the door of Corinne's ward. Pale-faced, Corinne said to the members of the Melendez family, "I missed a step on the stairs-that's all. I'm fine. You can go back now." Tabitha Webber, Garrett's mother and Corinne's daughter-in-law, was holding her hand. "Corinne, perhaps you shouldn't take a walk at night anymore. We were all worried sick." Corinne waved her hand and looked out. As she saw Adrienne, her eyes immediately lit up. "Adri? You're here, too. You just recovered. Who called you?" Adrienne wasn't used to being around the Melendez family, let alone a few of them. 60.6 % 16:44
