---- Chapter 11 One year later. "Mom! Quick, look! The waves are huge!" Eighteen-year-old Caleb was running on the beach, sunlight dappling his healthy skin. The Hawaiian sea breeze rustled his hair, and his laughter rang out, clear as a bell. "Careful! Don't run too fast!" I laughed, chasing after him with the sunscreen. "Mom, can we go snorkeling?" Caleb pointed excitedly at the coral reef in the distance. "I want to see sea turtles!" "Of course, sweetie." I helped him put on sunscreen. "But be careful, don't swim out too far. " "I know." Caleb nodded obediently, then suddenly threw his arms around me. "Mom, thank you for bringing me to Hawaii. It's so beautiful here." ---- I gently stroked his hair. "Silly boy. This is where you always wanted to come." "Yeah!" Caleb let go and started running on the sand again. "Mom, when I learn how to surf, I'll teach you, okay?" "Okay..."' I watched his bright, sunny smile, and tears welled up in my eyes. "Mom? Why are you crying?" Caleb ran back, looking at me with concern. "It's nothing, sweetie. Mommy's just so happy." I wiped away my tears. "Let's go surfing." "Awesome!" Caleb cheered, running towards the ocean... My eyes snapped open. Tears blurred my vision. Outside, the sky was gray, not the Hawaiian sunshine. The room was quiet. I was alone. ---- Caleb wasn't here. He would never be here again. I sat up, trembling, and clutched the urn on the nightstand. "Caleb... Mommy dreamed about you..." I gently stroked the cold box. 'Do you remember Hawaii? You said you wanted to go there to see the sea turtles..." Fresh tears welled up. It had been a year. A whole year. But every night, I dreamed of him. Dreamed of his laughter, his hugs, the promise we made to go to Hawaii together. Then I'd wake up to the harsh reality. I got dressed, held the urn, and walked out of the room. Today, I had somewhere to go.
