Chapter 6 How Dare You Betray Me? "Athena! How dare you cheat on me!" Lewis's roar cut through the air, like she had betrayed him. Athena looked at his twisted, furious face, darker than a thundercloud. She almost laughed. Where did he get the nerve to accuse her? Kit was just her assistant. She wasn't about to explain herself to Lewis. Calmly, she asked, "Lewis, what are you doing here?" Lewis had come planning to lower his pride and coax her back home. Dion had been a nightmare these past few days, and even Nina couldn't handle him. Lewis still didn't understand how Athena used to calm the boy so easily. But walking in and seeing another man in her apartment? That set him off. The guy looked young, like a college grad. Was this the reason Athena wanted a divorce? His face darkened at this. He grabbed her wrist hard and barked, "Athena, explain this! Who is that guy? Are you sneaking around cheating with him behind my back?" Kit saw Lewis put his hands on her and almost stepped forward. Athena shot him a look, telling him to hold back. Kit knew Athena could handle herself, so he stopped in his tracks. Still, he stood close by, watching Lewis like a hawk, ready to step in if the man tried anything underhanded. Lewis's grip tightened on the scar on Athena's wrist. She had gotten it years ago, saving his life. The wound had long healed, but pain shot through her again-like a cruel reminder of how useless her sacrifices had been. She gritted her teeth and growled, "Let go!" Lewis sucked in a breath. He noticed her pained expression, then saw the scar. When had she even gotten that? Maybe she cut herself cooking. The ugly mark-had she left it untreated on purpose, just to earn my pity? He scoffed coldly and finally let go, shoving down his anger, and finally let go. Lewis stared at her coldly, waiting for tears or excuses. But Athena said nothing. She twisted her wrist free, leaned on her crutch, and walked to the door. With a stony face, she opened it. "Get out of my house." Lewis stepped quickly in front of Athena, lowering his eyes to hers. His jaw tightened as he asked through his teeth, "Athena, don't you have anything to explain to me?" A mocking smile tugged at her lips. She lifted her gaze and met his, heavy emotion burning in her eyes. "And what about you, Lewis? Don't you have anything to explain to me?" Was that accident years ago his plan all along? Did he marry me because Nina was pregnant? Did he expect me to feed Nina's baby with my breast milk and raise the child as my own? And worst of all-was it him that ended my daughter's life? Would he ever confess the truth? For a moment, Lewis faltered under her sharp stare. A flicker of guilt passed through him, but it vanished just as fast, his handsome face smooth again. His voice came low and steady. "Taking Nina to the hospital was my fault. I saw your injuries weren't serious, so I didn't think much about it." Athena gave a soft, bitter laugh. Her eyes turned cold. "If you're that blind, maybe you should go find a doctor to fix your eyesight." That day her leg was badly hurt, while Nina only had a scratch. Now she could only walk with crutches, needing at least a month to recover. Nina, on the other hand, was barely hurt. Who was really worse off? Lewis didn't want to waste time on that. He said flatly, "Let's just move on. What will it take for you to come back with me?" "Back where? We don't have a home anymore." And there never will be again. In a month, I'll be free. Lewis frowned. "I still have other properties." "Oh? And where exactly is Nina staying?" He hesitated. "She's ... temporarily in one of my properties. Once things are settled, I'll figure it out." Then, almost defensively, he added, "That condominium was destroyed. We're lucky no one got hurt. What's wrong if I let Nina stay in one of my houses? You can't even accept that?" Athena stared at his pretense, disgust rising in her chest. Lewis tried to explain when he spotted the mocking look on her face. "Yes, I had a past with her, but that was ten years ago. You're not really jealous over that, are you? There's nothing between us now. Don't get the wrong idea." Lies rolled off his tongue so smoothly he probably believed them himself. Athena simply curved her lips into a faint smile and said nothing. Lewis mistook her silence for a chance he could convince her. His expression softened. "Athena, we've been married for years. Sure, our feelings have grown dull, but I don't mind if you needed some excitement. Just cut it off, and come home with me." Then he added, "Dion's been sick lately. He keeps asking for you." Asking for me? Of course. When he got sick, he thought of her. Nina had never cared for him a single day, never stayed up all night the way Athena did-holding him through fevers, coaxing him to take his medicine, and soothing his little tempers. When he was healthy, Dion clung to Nina, calling her his real mom over and over, proud of their blood tie. But when sickness hit, it was Athena-the stand-in mother-he cried for. Like father, like son. Neither of them was loyal. Both are ungrateful. Athena looked straight at Lewis. "Do you want me back as your wife or just to babysit your kid?" Lewis frowned and shot back, "Dion is your son. Taking care of him is your duty." The words nearly broke her calm. Even now, Lewis dared to lie right to her face. Did he really think I'm stupid? Perhaps because he felt guilty, Lewis's attitude softened again. Lewis spoke in a gentle voice. "You're my wife. I only have one son, and that's Dion. Everything I own will one day belong to him. Your place in this family will never be questioned." He tried again. "Why bother fighting with Nina? As long as you don't get mad at me, you'll always be my legal wife. Come home with me. Don't make a scene, alright?" Athena's face stayed calm, without the slightest change. Lewis thought she cared about being the legal wife. He thought a few empty promises would be enough to fool her into going back-to keep working for him and Nina like a servant. She wasn't that low. Not anymore. There was nothing left to say. Athena's voice turned cold. "Let's get divorced. Don't come looking for me again." Lewis thought lowering himself this much would make Athena soften and return. He never expected her to be so firm about leaving him. His face darkened at once. "You really want a divorce?" "Yes." Once she ended this ridiculous eight-year marriage, she would take her time settling the score. And in the end, she would make Lewis beg for mercy before her daughter's grave. Lewis stayed silent for a while. At last, he let out a cold laugh. His voice was icy. "I won't divorce you. "All these years I've been the one supporting you. You eat my food and spend my money. Do you really think you can survive without me?"
