Chapter 12 When Daniel arrived home , he immediately saw the wedding photos torn into pieces scattered across the floor . He froze in place . After a long moment , he took a deep breath and walked over . Next to the shredded photos was a small brazier holding some ashes . Gemma had burned those pictures with her in them . Only the photos with him in them were left - alone , discarded on the floor . His fists trembled as he clenched them tightly and stepped toward the bedroom . Daniel quickly opened the closet . He found that besides her ID and important documents , everything else was still there . In the closet were the new dresses he had bought to make it up to her , and the luxury necklaces and jewelry in the jewelry box . She hadn't taken a single thing with her . A sudden surge of determination hit him . He rushed out the door and drove straight to the courthouse . " We found the record for Daniel Webb and Gemma Hart . " Before Daniel could say anything , the staff added , " But Mr. Webb , our system shows that you and Ms. Hart have already completed your divorce proceedings and collected the divorce certificate . Daniel stood frozen , stunned and speechless , staring blankly at the staff . " No , that's impossible . The waiting period isn't over yet . How could the divorce be finalized ? " he demanded angrily . The staff glanced at him awkwardly . " It went through an expedited process . Our records show the certificate was picked up on the 3rd of this month . You and Ms. Hart are officially divorced . " Daniel stumbled back two steps , his entire body trembling , his mind feeling like it had just exploded . Divorced ? Gemma had collected the divorce certificate ? He stood there in disbelief , shaking his head over and over uncontrollably . " No … No way … Gemma loves me … She wouldn't … " " Mr. Webb ? Are you alright ? " the staff asked . He shoved away the hand trying to steady him , but tripped over his own feet and crashed hard to the floor . Veins bulged at his temple as he clutched his head in both hands , slamming his fists against his head in agony . " Mr. Webb , please calm down ! " The pain in his chest was so intense , he could barely catch his breath . How could he have been so stupid ? Did he really think he could hurt Gemma like that and she'd still stay ? Who did he think he was ? Tears spilled from his bloodshot eyes , the pain in his chest almost unbearable . " I can't find her … I've lost my wife ! " " Mr. Webb , does your wife have any other family ? Maybe she went to stay with them ? " Right . He thought of Sally . Gemma must be at the hospital with her . Daniel pushed himself up unsteadily and wiped the tears from his face . He didn't waste another second . As he rushed out , he called a friend . " Book me three tickets to Shineapolis . As soon as possible . Yes , now ! " Daniel was sweating profusely as he hurried , but he drove to the hospital tirelessly . He bought fresh flowers and fruit at the last minute . With a heart full of hope , he headed to the hospital room to see Gemma . But when he arrived , he found the room where Sally had been staying was now occupied by someone else . Stunned , he stared blankly at the stranger in the bed , thinking he must have the wrong room . Only after double - checking did his expression darken as he stormed to the nurse's station . " What's going on ? I've been paying to extend the stay for room 035. How can it be given to someone else ? " The nurse blinked , seeming to recognize him . An older nurse nearby frowned and looked up . " Which patient are you looking for ? " Daniel's expression shifted uncertainly as he lowered his voice . " Someone with the last name Turner . " " You mean Madam Turner ? She passed away last week … " Daniel looked stunned . " She passed … away ? " " Yeah . They say she died of stress . The doctors arrived too late , and she was barely holding on . Meanwhile , they were called to treat a woman pretending to be unconscious . Everyone knew she was fine , but her husband was so worried and upset . Madam Turner passed away before anyone could get to her . " Her granddaughter cried so badly in the hospital . They say they grew up relying on each other . She didn't even get to her grandmother one last time . That's tragic , isn't it ? "
