Chapter 5 Only now did I realize the hints had been there in social media posts for months. Sage's cryptic post: [Ugh, been puking every day lately. Early stages are rough. @Kai] Immediately Kai commented: [What's wrong? You were fine yesterday.] Their buddies asked: [Early stages of what?] Sage played mysterious: [Early stages of drinking. I'm building up my tolerance.] They were brazenly flirting on social media, making everyone part of their sick game. Just a few days ago he was still texting me-not asking how my wound was healing or how I was doing, but demanding I apologize for disrespecting Sage. He even sent me a whole essay, declaring like some kind of oath: "If you want to marry me, you have to accept that she's my best friend, my life-time soulmate. I promise this won't affect my feelings for you, but I absolutely will not cut contact with her. Absolutely not." I was stupid enough to think I could wait for him to put me first. Thank god I saw his true colors before the wedding. When Kai's dad arrived with the vice squad and reporters, I hid nearby. "Officer Westwood, what's the key evidence when busting prostitution?" Officer Westwood looked stern: "Naturally, catching them in the act is key evidence. But we also check chat records and transaction records-all important parts of our investigation." He leaned toward the camera seriously: "Anti-vice operations are our city's priority right now. Every time we respond to a call, the city TV station sends reporters with us. We hope everyone follows the law and doesn't embarrass themselves and their families!" It wasn't until he reached the door that he suddenly froze. He hadn't paid much attention to the address when they came, but wasn't this his son's new place? Officer Westwood hesitated about whether to knock, especially since he'd brought the whole squad and several reporters. But his always obedient, well-behaved son had such a good relationship with his fiancée-there was no way he'd be soliciting prostitutes. Maybe his son lent the new place to someone else? That must be it! After much internal struggle, he finally decided to knock: "Open up! Open up!" No movement inside, then suddenly an irritated male voice: "Who is it? So annoying!" His heart sank-wasn't that his son's voice? He turned to face the reporters: "Nobody's home. Probably a false report. Let's head back to the station." Squad members looked at each other: "Captain, sounds like someone's definitely in there." Even the reporters were saying: "That's not right-I clearly heard a guy's voice inside!" Just then, the door behind them swung open with a bang. Kai appeared with just a towel around his waist, his face still showing irritation. The moment he saw his father's face, he went pale as a sheet. Before he could get out the word "Dad," the squad officers kicked the door open and rushed in. Officer Westwood's face went dark as he nearly tripped over the threshold. Reporters swarmed in with their cameras. Kai stood shaking in the doorway, not daring to move. His father's face cycled through shades of green and white before he slapped Kai across the face. "You bastard!" Sage was lying naked on the bed, frantically grabbing the sheets to cover herself, completely stunned by the scene unfolding before her. "Who are you people! How dare you break into someone's home!" "Kai! Why are all these people in your place?!"
