Emma groaned softly as she opened her eyes to wake up to an empty bed . David hadnt come home at all , instead he chose to stay with Allison , who had acted weak and desperate for sympathy the night before . But Emma knew better ; her sisters asthma was rarely severe anymore , and fainting was likely a manipulative tactic . Yet , David had stayed with her all night . A sudden ringing cut through her thoughts . She grabbed her phone quickly , hoping it was David . But when she saw the name on the screen , her heart sank . It was her friend , Sophie . Im picking you up soon . Get dressed and lets go out . You need a break , Sophie declared before Emma could even utter a word , leaving no room for argument . Emma managed a weak smile and agreed , grateful for her friends concern , though she wasnt sure if a distraction would really make her feel better . Still , she needed something anything -to take her mind off of the mess her life had become . Meanwhile , David remained at Allisons side , watching her sleep . Hed stayed the entire night , watching over her as she recovered . He had no choice but to make sure she was alright before leaving . Certain she was fine , he stood up to leave but Allison sat up slowly , her expression softening as she looked at him . David … she began , her voice shaky . I didnt mean to say those things last night . I was just so afraid of what your grandfather might think of me . Please … if you could , tell Emma I didnt mean to hurt her . David stood there silently , his hands jammed into his pockets . He nodded , his face impassive . Ill let her know , he replied . But his voice held no warmth , no comfort . He didnt give her the reassurance she expected . He simply kept his distance , knowing that nothing he said would change the situation . Allison , her face showing the tiniest hint of confusion , watched him . She had hoped for something more something that would restore the relationship they once had . But instead , David seemed colder than ever . Could it be that he was finally seeing through her facade ? Could it be that David had fallen for Emma during the two years she was gone ? But Allison quickly dismissed the thought . She convinced herself that his coldness toward her was just anger and that he was unsure how to handle his marriage .
