Chapter 1 At dinner with my boyfriend and his crew, I spotted something shocking-his female buddy wasn't wearing a bra and her nips were on full display. I was torn about whether to say something when my boyfriend's face went dark. He snatched my purse and dragged the girl outside. When they stumbled back in after some serious wrestling, she was finally sporting some nipple covers. "Ugh, you're such a buzzkill! I'm setting the girls free-natural liberation!" Next thing I know, she's grabbing Kai's hand and slapping it right on her boobs: "Mine aren't even as big as yours-why do I need covers?" Kai tossed my bag back at me, then shot her the death glare: "Zip it and keep those things on!" I dug through my bag-yep, my backup nipple covers had vanished. Kai finally caught on: "Oh yeah, I gave Sage your nipple covers." Seriously? Playing Robin Hood with my stuff right in front of me? Going all knight-in-shining-armor for another chick while I'm sitting right here? Guess I'm getting dethroned. I gave him my sweetest smile and ripped off my own nipple covers: "Hand over hers-I need mine back. Unless you want me to go over there and peel them off myself." "Trust me, if I do it, she'll be showing way more than just her headlights." Two nipple covers hit the floor with a wet slap. The private dining room went dead silent. Everyone looked like they didn't know whether to stare or look away. Kai frowned-he clearly didn't expect his usually modest girlfriend to pull something like this. "Seriously? Over two fifteen-dollar nipple covers?" Kai didn't think he'd done anything wrong. He just thought I was being cheap and petty. Sage patted Kai's shoulder and reached into her shirt, peeling off the covers to hand back to me. "Here you go, girl. Kai's being an idiot-I'm sorry on his behalf. I literally didn't care, but he stood guard outside the bathroom until I put them on." "Turn around!" Suddenly, Kai barked at his buddies. Next second, he stripped off his shirt and wrapped it tightly around Sage. "Please, can you just act like a normal woman for once?" Sage pouted. "What's a normal woman supposed to act like?" She glanced at me with this disgusted expression, like I was something gross. "If it's like that, you might as well keep treating me as one of the guys." Kai's face was written all over with this protective, possessive look-but not for me. I suddenly felt completely over it. I grabbed Kai's messenger bag from the couch and dumped it on the floor. Out spilled allergy meds, a mini fan, and tampons-all for Sage. Meanwhile, I'd begged him this morning to remember my cold medicine, and he still hadn't thought of it once. "With memory this bad, you definitely don't qualify as a normal woman. Maybe see a doctor-early-onset dementia and all that." With that, I shoved the nipple covers into Kai's bag and threw it at his face before turning to leave. "I don't want someone else's used stuff-it's gross. Keep these for her. Next time grab them from your own bag instead of going through mine." Looks like Kai's bag was about to get a new permanent resident: nipple covers-FOR HER. "What are you even mad about?" Kai caught up with me at the door, grabbing my arm. 'You know how Sage is-scattered and totally chill about everything." When I didn't respond, he softened his tone. 'Next time I won't use yours, okay? I'll go buy her some." Even now, Kai still didn't get why I was pissed. 'Come on, it's my last night of freedom. Cut me some slack?" shook off his hand. "You've crossed way too many lines, Kai." What, do you and Sage have like a hundred-item bucket list or something?" He looked genuinely confused. I picked out our wedding venue alone because you had to have one last solo movie night with her." We had to postpone our medical check-up because you two had plans for one last solo sunrise trip to the mountains." You were late to our engagement party because your final solo movie with her still had thirty minutes left." Now that you've finished all your solo activities, suddenly there's this group bachelor party-but either way, Sage has to be there, right?" stared at him, hoping to see some reflection or guilt in his eyes. Well-nothing. He had this moment of realization and threw up his hands. "We're like siblings who shared the same crib growing up! Are you seriously jealous of her?" "Besides, we're doing this for you. You're the one who said I can't hang out alone with girls after we're married, so we're just getting our last taste of youth while we can." "Raven!" Sage's voice boomed from behind us. I heard everything you two just said, and I think when a buddy's getting married, we should keep some distance." She looked right at me, enunciating every word: "Kai, honey, this is gonna be the last time it's just you and me." Her eyes were full of vindictive satisfaction.
