Chapter 3 The doctor said Chloe only had surface injuries, but recommended keeping her overnight for observation. I held my daughter on the hospital bed, tossing and turning all night with images of Zander and Vivian's disgusting behavior running through my head. When morning sunlight crept through the curtains, the door to our room quietly opened. "Sage..." Zander stood in the doorway holding a bunch of flowers, that familiar gentle smile plastered on his face. "I brought your favorite lilies." I instinctively pulled my still-sleeping daughter closer and stared at him coldly. He shuffled awkwardly beside the bed and set the flowers on the nightstand. "How's Chloe doing? I was so worried I didn't sleep all night." "Get out." I kept my voice low. "Save the act." Zander's smile faltered. He glanced at sleeping Chloe, then suddenly dropped to one knee beside the hospital bed. "Sage, I know you're angry, but you have to believe me-you and Chloe are the ones I love most." I almost laughed out loud. This man who was helping Vivian steal my stuff yesterday had the nerve to say this? "Cut to the chase." I said, picking up Chloe as she stirred awake. "Drop the performance." Zander stood up awkwardly, wringing his hands. "Well, Vivian..." "I knew it." I sneered. "Here for your precious sister-in-law again." "She's pregnant." The words tumbled out as he avoided my eyes. "Two months along." I froze. How could Vivian be pregnant? Everyone in the family knew that big brother Marcus had been beaten so badly by loan sharks that he'd lost all function below the waist years ago. I stared at Zander in disbelief as nausea churned in my stomach. I realized these two had been screwing around way longer than I'd imagined. "So?" I fought to control my rage. Zander suddenly grabbed my hand. "Sage, you know big brother's house was foreclosed ages ago. Vivian's pregnant now-we can't make her live in some crappy rental, right?" Finally, I understood why he was here. "You want me to give Vivian my house?"
